The 35th Annual Hadrian Gala Graces the New York Public Library

The World Monuments Fund (WMF)—the preeminent organization dedicated to preserving global cultural landmarks—celebrated its 35th annual Hadrian Gala at the historic Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of The New York Public Library.

The evening highlighted the remarkable contributions of architect Peter Marino, FAIA, and Dr. Marilyn Perry, Chair Emerita of WMF and President Emerita of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, for their dedication to preserving Venice’s architectural heritage.

Since its inception in 1965, WMF has raised over $300 million, championing conservation efforts for more than 700 sites across 112 countries. This year’s gala, a Venetian-inspired celebration, garnered a record-breaking $2.1 million to support WMF’s initiatives. The night featured spellbinding performances by Grammy-winning opera singer Anthony Roth Costanzo, accompanied by musicians from the Opera Philadelphia Orchestra, and a custom menu by renowned chef Daniel Boulud. Christie’s conducted an exclusive live auction to support WMF’s global mission.

Honoring Global Leaders in Heritage Conservation

WMF President and CEO Bénédicte de Montlaur opened the evening, emphasizing the organization’s impact on a global scale: “World Monuments Fund is as much a movement as it is an organization, uniting communities and leaders committed to preserving cultural heritage and fostering respect for diversity.”

This year’s honorees have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Venice. Peter Marino, FAIA, recognized for his extensive preservation work as Chairman of Venetian Heritage, reflected on the honor: “It’s a privilege to support WMF’s mission to protect the world’s architectural and cultural heritage, especially in Venice—a city close to my heart.”

Dr. Marilyn Perry, the longest-serving WMF Board member, accepted the 2024 Hadrian Award. With a tenure of 40 years, Dr. Perry’s visionary leadership has been instrumental to WMF’s growth. Reflecting on her journey, she noted, “The Hadrian Award has drawn attention to our universal mission, and now, as an awardee, I celebrate World Monuments Fund as a core adventure of my life.”

A Night of Legacy and Patrons

Among the evening’s distinguished guests were Prince Amyn Aga Khan, Brook Berlind, Suzanne Deal Booth, Christian Louboutin, Daisy Soros, and Lauren Santo Domingo, all of whom lent their support to WMF’s conservation mission. The event was made possible by the generosity of Gregory Annenberg Weingarten, GRoW @ Annenberg, and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, with additional support from Tiffany & Co.
